Makinde Approves Contributory Pension Scheme for Oyo State Workers

Email : 22

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has approved the implementation of a contributory pension scheme for workers in the state, marking a major step in the government’s efforts to strengthen retirement benefits and ensure long-term financial security for public servants.

The approval was announced by state officials, who said the scheme would provide a structured framework for retirement savings through joint contributions by employees and the government.

According to the government, the initiative is designed to guarantee sustainable pension payments and improve the welfare of workers after retirement. Officials stated that the implementation process would involve collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including labour unions, pension administrators and government agencies, to ensure a smooth transition.

The contributory pension scheme is expected to align Oyo State with pension reforms already adopted in several states and at the federal level, where employees and employers contribute a percentage of monthly earnings into individual retirement savings accounts.

Government representatives said the move reflects the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and prudent financial management. Labour leaders welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step towards securing the future of workers and retirees in the state.

Further details regarding commencement dates, contribution rates and implementation guidelines are expected to be released by the state government.
