The Federal Government has assured Nigerians willing to return from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks that evacuation arrangements will be completed before June 30. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said ongoing screening and documentation exercises are part of efforts to facilitate the safe return of affected citizens.
According to the ministry, the exercise is being coordinated by the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria in collaboration with relevant South African authorities. The government disclosed that hundreds of Nigerians have already been screened and cleared for evacuation, while additional arrangements are being made to accommodate others who have indicated interest in returning home.
Officials said President Bola Tinubu approved multiple evacuation flights to support the repatriation exercise, with Air Peace designated to operate the flights. The first batch of returnees has already arrived in Nigeria, while subsequent flights are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
The evacuation programme was initiated following renewed anti-foreigner protests and attacks in parts of South Africa, which have raised concerns about the safety of foreign nationals, including Nigerians residing in the country. The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to the protection of Nigerians abroad and urged affected citizens to cooperate with officials handling the evacuation process.
Authorities also assured returnees of necessary support upon arrival in the country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would continue to engage South African authorities while monitoring developments to ensure the safety and welfare of Nigerians living in the country.
