You don’t need a “Christian company” to have Kingdom impact. Joseph ran Egypt’s economy for Pharaoh.
Most Christians in business feel the tension: Am I supposed to quit and go into “full-time ministry”, or is it okay to stay in this secular company?
Joseph answers it. He never pastored a church. He ran supply chains, managed risk, and advised a pagan king. And Scripture says God was with him in all of it.
You don’t have to leave Babylon to represent God in Babylon. You just have to lead like Joseph.
Work So Well They Can’t Ignore You
Joseph started as a slave. Then a prisoner. Then Prime Minister. Same man, different titles. What changed wasn’t his faith. It was his favour. And the favour came through excellence.
“The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favour in his eyes and became his attendant.” Genesis 39:2-4
Notice the chain: God was with him. He prospered. His boss noticed. Then promotion.
Potiphar didn’t convert. He just couldn’t deny the results. In secular environments, competence is your first sermon. Before you quote Scripture, close deals. Before you hand out tracts, hit your KPIs. Excellence earns you the right to be heard.
Interpret, Don’t Preach
When Pharaoh had disturbing dreams, Joseph didn’t start with a 3-point sermon. He solved the problem.
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream, you can interpret it.”
“I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.” Genesis 41:15-16
That’s the Joseph Principle: Radical humility + ridiculous competence. He took no credit, but he took responsibility. He gave God glory and Pharaoh a strategy.
You don’t have to say “Jesus” in every meeting. But you do have to bring wisdom that makes people ask where you got it.
Plan for Famine
Joseph’s genius wasn’t just spiritual. It was operational. He told Pharaoh:
“Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh.” Genesis 41:34-35
Faith isn’t anti-strategy. Joseph saved a nation because he ran scenarios, built reserves, and executed. The same God who gives dreams also gives spreadsheets.
If your business has no plan for a downturn, you’re not being “spiritual”. You’re being a bad steward.
The One Shift That Changes Everything
Stop trying to Christianise your company name. Start Christianising your character inside the company you have.
Joseph never changed Egypt’s logo. He changed Egypt’s future. He didn’t demand Pharaoh convert. He made himself so valuable that the Pharaoh said:
“Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?” Genesis 41:38
Your coworkers may never attend your church. But if you lead like Joseph, they’ll ask about your God.
Field Notes for This Week
1. Be the answer. What’s one problem at work that no one wants to touch? Take ownership this week. Solve it with excellence.
2. Credit God quietly. When someone compliments your work, try Joseph’s line: “I can’t take credit, but I’m grateful for the wisdom I’ve been given.”
3. Build your famine plan. If revenue dropped 30% tomorrow, what’s your move? Write the 3 steps today. That’s Joseph-level stewardship.
Closing Line
You weren’t sent to hide in a Christian bubble. You were sent to lead in Babylon. The goal isn’t to escape secular work. The goal is to be so excellent and so grounded that the secular world asks you to run it.
That’s the Joseph Principle. And it still works.
