Phones, Purity, and Parenting in a Pornified World

Email : 29

You wouldn’t hand your kid the keys to a bar. Stop handing them an unfiltered phone.

Average age of first porn exposure: 11. Device in hand: 8.

“Not my kid” is not a strategy. The enemy has a discipleship plan for your child. It’s called the algorithm. If you don’t have one, you’re losing.

Covenant With Your Eyes

Job made a decision before temptation:

“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.” Job 31:1

Covenant. Not “I’ll try.” Not “I hope.” Covenant.

Teach your kids to make covenants with their eyes. Model it. If Dad is watching stuff on the second screen, the talk won’t matter.

Set No Worthless Thing Before Them

David wrote the rule for the remote:

“I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.” Psalm 101:3

Worthless. Vile. If it wouldn’t play in the presence of Jesus, it shouldn’t play in your home.

This isn’t legalism. It’s wisdom. You’re protecting their imagination, which is where sin starts. James 1:14-15.

Bring Them Up in Training

Paul didn’t say “hope they turn out okay”:

“Bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4

Training. Instruction. That means filters, conversations, accountability, and delayed smartphones.

You don’t give a 10-year-old a car because “everyone has one.” Same with phones. Their brain isn’t ready. Wait as long as you can. Then coach, don’t just control.

Field Notes for This Week

1. Do a tech audit. What devices, what apps, what access? If you don’t know, you can’t protect.

2. Install Covenant Eyes or Bark. Today. For you and them. Accountability is love.

3. Have “the talk” before the world does. Age 8 is too late for many. Age 6: “God made bodies good. Some people use pictures to hurt hearts.” Keep it age-appropriate.

Closing Line

Purity isn’t prudish. It’s protection.

You’re not sheltering them from reality. You’re shepherding them through it. Be the parent who fights for their mind.
